Notes

  • Benjamin Franklin Lovin was Baptist preacher, as was his son JamesHenry.  Ben also served in the Confederate mounted infantry as amember of Company F, Gillam's Regiment, Confederate Mounted Infantryof Mississippi, and was captured by the enemy, and was held in aprison camp until after the end of the war.

    ---------------------------------------------
Jerry Cherry comments that the family moved around a lot, due to Ben'spastoral calling.  He comments also in regard to Pink Brewer, that shewas part or full Native American, which would mean, of course, thatone or both her parents were also:
"We have reason to believe that she is either full or part NativeAmerican. She had a sister named Lieu (or Lou) and possibly a brothernamed Oscar."

"Benjamin Franklin Lovin married "Pink" Brewer and had children named:Allie, Mattie, Anna, Minnie, Ida, Ben Lovin Jr."

"B. F. Lovin was a minister and they lived at different times inArkansas, Oklahoma and Texas."

Peggy Conley reports on the documentation for Ben's participation inthe Civil War for the Confederacy.

"According to Pink's application [for a confederate widow's pension],B. F. served in Mississippi from September 1, 1864 until the close ofthe war in Company F. Gilliam's cavalry. There is a letter from theTexas Controller to the War Department inquiring about B. F.'s warrecord. The answer from the War Department, Adjutant General's Office, dated June 10, 1919, states:
'The name B. F. Lovin has not been found in the roll of Company F,Gillam's regiment, Confederate Mounted Infty, dated June 20, 1864, theonly roll of company on file. Prisoner of war records show that B. F.Lovin, a private in Company 4, said organization, was surrendered May4, 1865 and paroled May 18, 1865 at Granada, Mississippi. Signed byAdjutant General'"

Eddie, Henry and Ada are the children of Benjamin Franklin's firstwife, Isabella Wigley (also spelled Wiggley).  His wife here isLucinda Pink Brewer, mother of Ida and Ally here.  A Lovin Familygenealogy on RootsWeb gives us the exact birth dates for Eddie andHenry.

Eddie is Bailey Edward Lovin, born 15 October 1866 in Mississippi.  Iwould think he was born in Holmes County, Mississippi, since this iswhere both his parents were born, and the next child is reported asborn in Holmes County.  Henry is James Henry Lovin, who became apreacher like his father.  He was born on 1 March 1869 in HolmesCounty, Mississippi.  Ada was born in April 1874 in Hunt County,Texas, according the "BlueBonnetGal" in her anonymous genealogy of theLovin and related families.

Pink and B F married in Hunt County, Texas, on 5 September 1876,according to the Texas Marriage Index for 1876.  This tells us thatIsabella died in 1876 or earlier.

Ben's birth here is different from that given by the Linda Dudleygenealogy.  That genealogy reports an exact birth date for Ben as 10Mar 1848.  But in the 1900 census, the birth month and year arerecorded as May 1850.  The enumerator's hand is somewhat scribbly, sothe month could be Mar instead of May, but the year is clearly 1850,which also matches his reported age as 50.  The 1910 report, though, correctly reports his age consistent with birth in 1848.

Note that the report for the last two children show that their motherwas born in Arkansas.  This would match the birth place of LucindaPink Brewer, 2nd wife of Benjamin.  The mother of the first two wasborn in Mississippi, but both these children, Mattie and Anna, werealso born after the death of Isabella Wiggley and the marriage of Bento Lucinda.  So it appears the mother of all the children listed hereshould have been born in Arkansas.

In the 1910 census, the mother of Annie (Anna) is also reported asborn in Arkansas.  Perhaps in the 1900 census the enumeratorinadvertently repeated the MS from the parents' entry for the firsttwo children.

In this census the place of birth of Lucinda's parents is changed fromMississippi to Arkansas, the correct state of her birth.

A descendant Jerry Cherry reports from family tradition that the deathof Ben occurred in Alice, Jim Wells County, Texas.  I have not beenable to find the Texas Death Index record or other documentation,  Theodd thing is that they were living in Oklahoma at the time, as far asother indications show.  Lucinda Pink Lovin died in Okfuskee County,Oklahoma.  Jim Wells County is in the area where Ben had lived at onetime, and he may have been back there on a visit when he died.  I'dlike to learn more, but those details are hiding from me.

"Benjamin Franklin Lovin was my maternal great-grandfather and was anitinerant Baptist minister. He lived at various times in various townsin OK, and Alice and Sonora TX, and likely Arkansas.  Family traditionstates that he died in Alice, Texas sometime in the early 1900s."
