Note the name of Leumana in Holden's transcription. Holden does notgive sources for his names and information, though he has done primaryresearch and draws upon family information. In the 1880 census above, her name is just the initials L J. But in 1900 it is Levina. Thisclarifies the name in light of names in the Padgett family. This isclearly an attempt to spell the name Lavinia, which is William'smother's name. It is spelled in sources Lavinia, Louvinia and othervariations.
Her nickname appears in some censuses and in William's deathcertificate as Viney, a common nickname for other women named Laviniain the 1800s. These indicators lead me to conclude that the daughterws named after her grandmother, Lavinia Nancy McSwain. Holden told methat while we knew her as Lavinia in the Arkansas family, in NorthCarolina she was known as Nancy. This would also help explain hisuncertainty about the form of the name of the daughter, not beingfamiliar with the grandmother as Lavinia, and Leumana appears to be anattempt to transcribe a form of Lavinia.
