Emily Jones Bates married Cyrus Lewis Terry, a son of Lewis Terry.
Her older sister Martha Oneida Bates married William Joseph Terry, a
son of William Barney Terry and a grandson of Lewis Terry. Martha
married first, in 1866. Emily was only 5 years younger, but she
married later, in 1868. Thus when Emily married Cyrus, she became
her older sister's aunt.

In 1920, Martha is enumerated under the name of Ned, which must be
her nickname. In 1920 two unmarried sons are still living in the
household of Martha and her husband William Joseph Terry. Their
widowed daughter Agnes Beavers is also in their home, with her
daughter Lillian, age 5.

In 1928, Martha lost her husband. They had lived their whole lives
in Murray County, Georgia. In 1930 she is living with her unmarried
son Dock, who also has what appears to be a sister-in-law and her
daughter (niece to Dock). Martha's name in the 1920 and 1930
censuses was confusing and hard to read. I could not make sense of
it at first. In my research, this was the first indication I had
found of Martha's nickname Ned. I later found the same name for her
in the 1920 census, as reported above. This nickname probably comes
from her middle name Oneida.

Notes for David BEAM

David Beam was born in Geneva, Switzerland. His grandfather was born
in Hamburg, Germany. Michael's son John Teeter Beam, also born in
Hamburg, moved to Switzerland, where he married Rebecca Raynolds
(Reynolds) died. In 1767 John Teeter moved his family to South
Carolina. In 1778, Rebecca diesd and three years later John married
a German woman in South Carolina, Elizabeth Rudolph. A Beam family
genealogy provdies very good historical detail and texts form
newspaper articles about this family.

Notes for Martin Samuel BEAM

A Hamrick family genealogy reports that Martin Samuel Beam was born
in Switzerland, but gives no source for this fact. But US censuses
from 1850 report him as born in North Carolina, as do several family
genealogies.

Martin Samuel Beam
Birth 15 Feb 1801 in Geneva, Switzerland
Death 25 Feb 1866 in NC
Burial Rutherfordton City Cem, Rutherfordton, Rutherford, NC
Marriage 2 Sep 1822 to Rebecca Harrill in NC
Birth 7 Jun 1802 in NC
Death 30 Aug 1892 in NC
-- Ancestry Trees, Hamricks of Ireland,
http://trees.ancestry.com/tree/9887369/person/-728328093

This Hamrick genealogy appears to have confused Martin's birth place
with that of his father David, reported by other sources to have
been born in Switzerland on 17 Apr 1767.

David Beam
Birth 17 Apr 1767 in Geneva, Switzerland
Death 4 Jan 1858 in Rutherford, North Carolina, United States
Spouse Rachel Cain
Birth 2 Oct 1777 in Lincoln, North Carolina
Death 10 Apr 1865 in Rutherford, North Carolina
Son Martin Samuel
Birth 15 Feb 1801 in North Carolina
Death 28 Feb 1866 in Rutherford, North Carolina
-- Jim Blanton,
http://trees.ancestry.com/tree/7871629/person/-222650432?ftm=1

The Hamrick and Blanton genealogies and others report the date of
Martin's marriage to Rebecca Harrill as 2 September 1822. One or
two report 3 September 1822. Several of the genealogies cite a
marriage record for the documentation of this. There are 2 problems
with this. One problem is that the name of the husband in this
marriage record is David Beam.

North Carolina Marriage Collection, 1741-2004, www.ancestry.com
Source: County Court Records Rutherfordton, NC
David Beam, Spouse: Rebeckah Harrill,
Marriage 2 Sep 1822 Rutherford County, North Carolina

The second is that the birth date reported by most of the
genealogies for their first son is in 1818! And interestingly, that
son's name is David. What is going on here? The year date of 1822
could work, as Rebecca would be 20 years old and Martin 21. But if
their son David was born in 1818, it is 99% likely they married
before this date., about 1917. In that case Rebecca would have been
only 15, not impossible but a bit unusual, 16-17 being more common.

Another genealogist reports some family details from family sources.
This reports the date of marriage as 23 September 1822. This sounds
more reasonable, since theire is a mismatch of the husband's name in
teh 2 September record.

===============================
Information about Rebecca and Martin Beam.

Misses Bettie and Ida Green of Ellenboro, North Carolina, early
teachers in Rutherford County schools, gave the date of birth,
death, and marriage of Rebecca and Martin Beam to Irene Harrill as
follows.

Rebecca Harrill - b. June 7, 1802, d. August 30, 1892, m. September
23, 1822 Martin Beam - b. February 15, 1801, d. February 28, 1866

Miss Bettie was doubtless the only person living at the time of
Irene Harrill's life that knew exactly where the graves of Housand
Harrill and Frances Philadelphia Street Harrill were located.

Miss Bettie and Ida evidently never married and they, too, were
descendents of Housand and Frances Harrill.

Mary McDaniel appears to be the person enumerated in 1850 as Mary
Beam age 18. There is a discrepancy in her reported age, as we
would expect her to be 28 in 1860, instead of 30. But the name and
her presence here as a Beam daughter are supported by a marriage
record. Mary's husband has probably died.

It appears from sources cited that Richard lived to be two weeks
short of 100 years old. However, the actual age reported in the
June 1860 census was 103, which would make the birth year 1757.
This source has an exact birth date, which would make the age 100 on
July 6 1860. The notes below from that same source say Richard was
92 in 1850, and Sarah age 85. In the 1860 census Sarah does not
appear.
